Being a somewhat recent graduate, I'm playing that fun game with myself every single day where I want to do something different with my life. It's torturous at times, so I cherish the good days I feel happy and content with what I'm doing.
Forbes.com posted an article stating that according to the most recent available data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "the average worker today stays at each of his or her jobs for 4.4 years, but the expected tenure of the workforce's youngest employees is about half that." This statistic is exciting and a little daunting. We want the security of a career path that is right for us, but we are more likely to bounce around trying different jobs, which means a lot of updates to our resumes. I thought it would be interesting to start a regular post about the daily lives of different people, so people who might be as confused as I am can have a little insight into various career choices.
Naturally to start it off, I'm going to share what I do during a regular day as a Stylist. To have a job like mine you need to be very flexible. If you want to have a set schedule everyday where you know when you'll be eating lunch and going home for the day, this is not the job for you.
My day usually starts at the office, unless I need to go straight to a store or client's house to pick something up. I open packages and organize the pieces on each rack, by client. We have a system in place to keep track of every receipt and everything that comes in and out of the office by date. We try to avoid any sort of confusion of where anything came from or where it went after we received it, so we keep everything stored on Evernote. Evernote is really helpful because we can update it from our phones and my boss can check it whenever she needs to answer a question for a client quickly or see what my to-do list looks like for the day.
I will respond to any e-mails, make phone calls to New York, if any, and then I usually meet with my boss around 10:30-11:00. We'll go over the clients we are currently working with, any new projects, what needs to be done that day, and what takes priority.
After we meet, I finish up work on the computer and fill up my car. Something I do to make my life a little easier is put all of the errands I need to make in order by distance. If I need to go west to Beverly Hills or Century City I like to go early so I can be back on this side of town before traffic gets bad. I'm at Neimans, Saks, and Barneys almost every day and we have some clients that live in Beverly Hills as well.
At most of the stores we shop at we know someone that we exclusively work with, which allows us to use multiple clients' credit cards without them being present. That's one of the awesome parts about my job: making so many close contacts with people in LA and NY from Neimans, Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, Dolce & Gabbana, Oscar de la Renta, Chloe, and Carolina Herrera, to name a few. If and when I decide to go off on my own, I will feel a lot more confident knowing I have people I can work with at any of those stores.
Some of the errands I may have include making returns and exchanges, dropping off and picking up clothes from clients, and a good amount of time is spent shipping clothes back and forth from LA to NY. We have clients in NY who we shop for here and then send the pieces to them. My boss also has close relationships with boutiques in Brooklyn that send her new pieces as they come in that they know our clients will like.
A creative part about my job is making lookbooks for the clients. After we buy new stuff for them, I go online and make boards on Polyvore of the different outfits. We make that into a book on Shutterfly and give it to the clients to have on hand when they are getting ready. This is something I could spend hours doing.
Balenciaga Thick Square Acetate Sunglasses, Balenciaga Papier A4 Zip, Eileen Fisher dress, Isabel Marant Beaded Collar Necklace, and Proenza Schouler d'Orsay Flats
After running errands all day, I come back to the office and log everything I did, bought, or returned, and organize the office to make it look good. Some packages may have arrived while I was out so I open and organize those too. We may have a fitting to go to, our clients all work during the day so fittings usually happen after 4 pm and can go until 8 PM. At the end of the day, I send my boss a list of everything I did that day in case a client asks her for any updates.
That's what I do in a rather long nutshell. Of course there are crazy stressful days where everything seems to be going wrong and I can't catch a break, but there are also days where I love my job and I couldn't imagine doing anything else.
I would love to hear your ideas of other jobs/careers I should post about next that you're interested in learning more about!
